Designing Your Kitchen against Visible Dirt

Keeping your kitchen clean can be a challenge. You’ve got a lot to contend with: spills, grease, stains, dust, oil, and more. Luckily, if you’re considering a remodel, there are many design choices available to you that can make cleaning up in the kitchen quicker and simpler. Incorporate these clean kitchen design tips from Piscitello Home Center so you can spend less time scrubbing and more time enjoying your home.

Select the Right Cabinets

Nearly all kitchens use cabinets for storage, and choosing the right ones can bring the style and function you want – while keeping the cleaning and maintenance easy. Consider cabinets that go all the way up to the ceiling. That way, dust, and dirt can’t settle on top of the cabinets, so you won’t have to reach the top of them to clean. This option tends to increase the amount of storage the cabinets can provide you as well.

Another tip is to select cabinets designed with a flat front. Doing this reduces the nooks, crannies, and ridges that dirt and fumes can buildup on, and a flat surface is easy to wipe down quickly. Take note, however, that cut-out door handles provide another area for crumbs or dust to collect.

Choose an Easy-to-Clean Backsplash

The backsplash you choose for your kitchen can have a substantial impact on how difficult it is to keep clean. A backsplash with no grout is much easier to wipe down and won’t provide crevices for dirt to hide out in. These backsplashes are made of materials like:

  • Quartz
  • Granite
  • Marble
  • Porcelain
  • Quartzite

Just be aware that marble is relatively porous and can be stained by liquids like tomato sauce and red wine. Other flat, easy-to-clean materials include glass and stainless steel.

Even with these options on the market, though, tile is still the most popular material for a backsplash. If you have your heart set on tile but value an easy-to-maintain surface, opt for large tiles to minimize grout lines you’ll have to clean.

Pick Appliances that Don’t Give You More Work

Choosing appliances that simplify clean-up can make a huge difference in how easy it is to keep your kitchen spotless. For example, selecting stainless steel appliances that are resistant to fingerprints can make cleaning much faster and easier. You should also consider appliances that don’t have textured surfaces and look out for design features that would make cleaning difficult. For example, knobs that are too close together to fit a rag or sponge between can make your cleanup that much harder.

Another tip is to look for appliances with self-cleaning functions so you can let them do the work for you. One of the best examples is an oven with a pyrolytic, or high-heat, self-cleaning function. This is means that the oven will lock and set itself to a very high temperature to burn off any leftover residues. Nowadays, even appliances like coffee makers sometimes offer self-cleaning features, so look out for those as well.
